We continue our trips to High Ridge Haven to add amenities and formalize the landscape around the vacation home for the enjoyment of guests. Recently, we took on the task of installing a game lawn as a do-it-yourself project. Not only were we able to do the project economically, but it was also an educational adventure.
The adventure started with picking up a 10' U-Haul trailer and driving to Turf Mountain Sod near Brevard, NC. This is a family run farm and my interactions with them through email and by phone were pleasant.
The sod farm is located in a pretty valley framed by mountains. We were directed to drive directly on the field where fresh sod (Black Beauty) had been scraped in 10' rolls. At the pick-up point, workers took their fork lift to pick up a palette loaded with rolls of sod and loaded it directly into the U-Haul. They picked up a second palette and placed it from front to back so it fit perfectly.
Purchasing the sod direct was not only less expensive, but the sod was fresh, healthy and vigorous. Each roll was pretty heavy to handle, but with each roll covering 10' at a time, progress was quick with installation. Typically, you purchase sod squares at a mark up without necessarily knowing how long it has sat on a palette yellowing.
Not the perfect tool for the job, but we used a drywall saw to cut the sod around obstacles such as rocks and timbers, providing a custom installation touch.
The new game lawn now softens the landscape, creates a boundary for a future rock garden, and provides guests with a place for corn hole, badminton, croquet, bocci, etc.
